A Drop of Bitterness, A Lifetime of Steadfastness

A Drop of Bitterness, A Lifetime of Steadfastness

My grandmother was always someone who took care of her health. She paid attention to what she ate and never neglected her exercise. She also cared about our healthy lifestyle; whenever we overindulged in sweets, she would immediately warn us. “Your teeth will decay, it causes diabetes, you’ll gain weight,” she would say-but when she said this, her voice wasn’t harsh, rather calmly persuasive. She didn’t like us ordering food from outside much. “There’s nothing like home-cooked meals,” she would say. When we stayed inactive, she got impatient: “You’re young! I’m old, yet I still move every day. Come on, get up, you’re lazy,” she would tell us.

She didn’t approve of everything we did. In fact, most of the time she thought what we were was not enough and wanted to show us that we could do better. Her strictness wasn’t harsh but guiding. It was a determination filled with kindness.

The boundaries she set with her words were an extension of her way of life. She spoke where everyone else remained silent and carried the burdens others avoided. She never twisted her words. Sometimes she told us truths we didn’t want to hear. At first, they felt heavy, maybe even stung, but then they forced us to reflect and helped us move to the next stage.

The other day, I tasted a spoonful of olive oil. That familiar burning sensation appeared in my throat—a feeling that comes from polyphenols. That subtle bitterness that reminds us olive oil is healthy... I thought: some people are just like that. They sting lightly at first, but their lasting effects are good for you.
Just like my grandmother.

My grandmother always wanted better for us. What she said sometimes stung, but it moved us to take action. Just like that subtle burn in a drop of olive oil... noticeable at first, then something changes inside.

When founding Keyana, we moved forward without forgetting my grandmother’s approach. We valued what olive oil should have: a proper, balanced, and long-lasting effect. Because we know that goodness doesn’t always have to be sweet. Sometimes, a drop of bitterness is the right path.

Note:
Polyphenols are naturally occurring components in olive oil that are considered highly valuable for health. These substances are found in higher concentrations especially in quality productions such as extra virgin olive oil and early harvest cold-pressed olive oil. The bitterness left on the tongue and the slight burning sensation in the throat are indicators of this valuable content. Polyphenols are not only important for health but also a defining element of olive oil’s character.
